Welcome to our Wiki!

An interface is the means of communication or interaction between a computer system and other entities such as printers, other devices, and software; a user interface enables interaction between machines and humans. As human users, we encounter interfaces every day: apps on our smart phones or tablets, MP3 players in your cars, even ATMs. All of these have interfaces that have been carefully designed to facilitate specific technical functions and guide us through our interactions with the system. The word “interface” has become so common in our vocabulary that we now use it as a verb. Most of us interface with so many different systems so regularly that the design and functionality of those interfaces becomes invisible to us.

Students in the Spring 2017 semester of Northern Illinois University's ENGL 424: Writing for Electronic Media course have paired up to analyze nine social media interfaces: Twitter, Grindr, Instagram, Reddit, Farmers Only, YouTube, 4chan, Tumblr, and Snapchat. The goal of this project is to step back and critically examine social media interfaces to reveal not only their main functions, but also how any technical affordances and constraints, coupled with various policies and rules, can influence user experience, especially communication behaviors. Students have documented their findings here.
